Know Your Rights: Photography and the Law

In 1999 a photographer named Jonathon Mannion took a photo of a basketball player named Kevin Garnett. This image was to be used in SLAM magazine. This picture was so iconic, that later The Beer Brand Coors decided to recreate the shot for an LA billboard advertisement. Jonathon Mannion was willing to go to court for the protection of his photo. In court The Beer Brand Coors were guilty of the 1. The timing, 2. The rendition, and 3. The creation of the subject can influence the copyright ability of a photograph. Therefore the court decided to rule in the photographers favor. These types of Copyright cases protect the feel and look of a photo. He also stated in a 2013 interview that quote “Photographers now have a food to stand on when others change their images for commercial gain.” I agree with Mannion, because it was his photo and therefore shouldn't have been tampered without consent.
